“Before the World Cup would you have given £32 of your own money to see England lift the trophy? Half of you would have”

Right before the start of the FIFA 2014 World Cup, we asked respondents how much of their personal money they would pay to see England win the World Cup, and by way of reference we also asked how much they would pay to see Germany or Spain be the first team eliminated from the tournament.

Approximately half of the respondents would pay to see England win the World Cup, and these people would on average give £32. More people would pay for England to win than for Germany or Spain to be eliminated first, but 39% and 36% of respondents respectively said that they would pay to see them knocked out. Those respondents said they would pay over £10 less on average to see these eliminations than to see England win the tournament, but would pay almost £10 more to see Germany eliminated first than Spain. Go England!
